Mayor Kim A. Thomas
"Welcome to a brighter tomorrow!"
Welcome to Richmond Heights, Ohio!
Richmond Heights is a vibrant, community-focused city with a proud past and a promising future. Historically part of Euclid Township, the area was once predominantly rural, defined by farms, orchards, and open land throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. As Cleveland expanded, Richmond Heights evolved into a suburban community, attracting families seeking a high quality of life with convenient access to regional economic opportunities. The development of key corridors such as Richmond Road and Highland Road supported this growth, leading to the City’s official incorporation in 1960.
A Thriving, Inclusive Community:
Today, Richmond Heights is home to more than 10,000 residents within approximately 4.4 square miles. Our city blends small-town charm with diverse housing options, offering something for everyone, from apartments and condominiums to senior housing, traditional single-family homes, and more upscale residences with the new Belle Oaks Development. Richmond Heights is a welcoming, inclusive community where residents of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy an affordable, high-quality lifestyle.
Located just 13 miles east of downtown Cleveland, Richmond Heights offers the best of suburban living with easy access to Northeast Ohio’s cultural, educational, and professional opportunities.
Education & Lifelong Learning:
The Richmond Heights Local School District is committed to providing a personalized and supportive educational experience, ensuring each student has the tools needed to succeed. The district is recognized not only for academic achievement but also for its state-championship and highly competitive athletic programs, which allow students to excel both in the classroom and on the field.
Residents also benefit from close proximity to numerous higher education institutions, including Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, John Carroll University, Ursuline College, and Cuyahoga Community College, making lifelong learning easily accessible.
Public Safety: A Top Priority
Safety is paramount in Richmond Heights, and we are proud to maintain experienced, professional, and fully staffed Police and Fire Divisions dedicated to protecting our community.
Police Division:
The Richmond Heights Police Division is committed to proactive policing, community trust, and visible presence throughout the city. Our officers work diligently to ensure safety while building strong relationships with residents and businesses.
We are proud to announce that Richmond Heights now has certified Bike Patrol Officers. Bike patrol enhances community policing by allowing officers to navigate neighborhoods, parks, and business districts more effectively than traditional vehicles. This approach improves visibility, strengthens community interaction, and enables quicker response in areas where vehicles may have limited access. Bike patrol officers play a vital role in crime prevention, special events, and neighborhood engagement.
FIRSTCALL Program:
One of the most exciting additions to our public safety services is FIRSTCALL. FIRSTCALL is a critical, community-focused response program that provides immediate support in non-emergency situations that require compassionate intervention. This service connects residents to appropriate resources quickly and effectively, helping to de-escalate situations, provide guidance, and prevent crises before they escalate into emergencies.
FIRSTCALL is an essential tool in strengthening community safety, improving response outcomes, and ensuring that residents receive help tailored to their needs. It reflects our city’s commitment to innovative, people-centered solutions that prioritize both safety and well-being.
Richmond Heights is a proud member of the Suburban Police Anti-Crime Network (SPAN), allowing our city to collaborate with neighboring communities to share resources and strengthen regional safety efforts. Police and Fire 9-1-1 services are provided by Chagrin Valley Dispatch, a trusted regional partner serving municipalities across Northeast Ohio.
Fire Division:
The Richmond Heights Fire Division continues to evolve to meet the growing and changing needs of our community. In addition to providing high-quality fire suppression and emergency medical services, we are excited to share several important advancements.
We now have a Community Paramedic, a specialized role focused on preventive care, follow-up services, and support for residents who frequently utilize emergency services or require additional medical guidance. This service helps reduce unnecessary emergency room visits, improves patient outcomes, and ensures residents receive the proper care at the right time, often in the comfort of their own homes.
Recreation, Wellness & Senior Services:
Through the dedication of our Recreation Department and Recreation Board, Richmond Heights offers year-round programs and events that bring our community together. Signature events such as Fall Fun Fest at Greenwood Farm and our annual Health and Wellness Event create opportunities for connection and celebration.
Residents can stay active through affordable fitness classes at the Richmond Heights Community Center and enjoy live entertainment during our popular Concerts in the Park series. The Recreation Department also partners with organizations such as Hillcrest Meals on Wheels, Senior Transportation Connection, University Hospitals, Tri-C Encore Program, and the Community Partnership on Aging to ensure our seniors receive essential support and services.
Infrastructure & City Services:
The Richmond Heights Service Department plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and well-kept community. Services include hazardous waste disposal, seasonal leaf collection, tree limb and brush removal, bulk item pickup, and ongoing maintenance of city infrastructure, all designed to enhance the quality of life for our residents.
Parks, Green Space & Natural Beauty:
Richmond Heights is proud of its expansive green spaces, robust tree canopy, and well-maintained public parks. Residents enjoy the programs and events at Richmond Heights Community Park, DeSan Park, and Greenwood Farm Community Park. Greenwood Farm spans 18 acres and features a historic 1800s barn, a 1900s farmhouse, a community garden, and a new large pavilion, offering a unique blend of recreation, history, and community gathering space.
Communication, Transparency & Engagement:
We are committed to keeping residents informed and engaged. Our e-newsletter and social media platforms deliver timely updates on city news and events. At the same time, the City Edition newsletter is mailed to every household and business three times a year. Real-time information is also shared via our electronic marquees at the intersection of Highland and Richmond Roads. As well as the entrance of our Community park on Highland!
City Council meetings are livestreamed and archived online, allowing residents to stay informed at their convenience. Our regularly updated website serves as a central hub for public notices, event calendars, forms, departmental resources, and more, accessible anytime, day or night.
Looking Ahead:
From strong neighborhoods and local businesses to exceptional public services and natural beauty, Richmond Heights continues to grow with purpose. We are committed to thoughtful planning, responsible governance, and preserving what makes our city special, while building a future that is safe, vibrant, and prosperous for generations to come.
